Rao Bahadur Balaji Hari Kumthekar is my Great Great Great Grandfather. He was born on October 21st, 1855. He went to Satara High school in the Mudhol region of India. After that, he went to Poona Engineering College to study for a government appointed engineering career. The first source is an excerpt from a book called ‘Who’s Who in India’ written in 1912. Rao and his father were mentioned in this document.

After college, Rao had four children, one of whom was my dad's grandfather. In this family tree written in Marathi that I found in my Grandpa’s house, the four children's names are shown who are direct ancestors to me. The oldest male that is written on this file (Mahesh Punth – top of chart) lived in 1600’s. My Grandpa’s name is circled on the chart in yellow. Rao Bahadur Kumthekar, the focus of my project, is circled in black.

This is a painting of Rao Bahadur Kumthekar when he worked for the city of Bombay in the Public Works Department. He became the Chief Engineer shortly after the first source was written and he fought for social reform during the British occupation of India. The title ‘Rao Bahadur’ was given to him for his service. Translated, "Rao" means "prince", and "Bahadur" means "brave" or "most honorable." 

In his lifetime, Rao Bahadur Kumthekar accomplished many great things. He fought for independence from the British and created efficient city systems through his government role. His actions made our family's name well known in India. Lastly, here is a Google Maps image of a road named after Rao Kumthekar in India.
